Karl Hourigan is a songwriter and guitarist. In the 70's was a member of Victoria BC band Easy Money. See: neontasterecords.bandcamp.com/album/collection-79-82
Today he writes and plays with The Malarkeys: themalarkeys.com/
and the duo Gail and Karl: www.gailandkarl.com/index.html
Blogs now and then at: electricbard.com/
Plays with Sherman "Tank" Doucette and Kenny "Blues Boss" Wayne, too:

Seymour Duncan L'il 59 bridge pickup in the bridge position
Просмотров 189Год назад
The Karl Hourigan Signature Loaded Pickguard from Seymour Duncan? Well, not quite. I took the Everything Axe pickguard and made two mods: 1. I swapped out the standard JB Jr. from the bridge position and replaced it with the L'il 59 bridge pickup and 2. I rewired the tone controls so I can roll off some top end on each of the 59's, leaving the Duckbucker in the middle without a tone control. I'...

Making It Right recorded at Abbey Road Studio 2

11 musicians descended on Abbey Road Studio 2 on July 4, 2019 to record six songs in one ten-hour session. This is one of the songs we recorded. Most of it was done live off the floor with a few overdubs. Recorded by Engineer Chris Bolster and Senior Recordist Matt Jones; thank-you gentlemen. The amount of work those two guys did for us was phenomenal and we are really grateful to them. The tra...
Christmas is Coming To Harrington Lane (2021 Audio Mix)

A Christmas Song that celebrates lights, candles, carols, home, and....Stuart MacLean! So what’s so special about “Harrington Lane”? Well, originally this song wasn’t even going to be a Christmas song, but lyrically I just couldn’t find an idea to suit the music. Once we struck upon the idea that maybe it wanted to be a Christmas song, the ideas started to take shape. In the earliest versions i...

Christmas is Coming To Harrington Lane
By the preamble i thought you could play but how can you not even tell its out of tune.
Been listening to the pure vintage pups and think I like the 73s best
Interesting. I'm sure when you replaced the whole pickguard set you moved from the old style Cray switch wiring to the new style which gives the bridge pickup a tone control? I'm sure that made a difference to. My Cray has the old style which has no tone control on the neck pickup. I think that's standard for them.
Your right, the standard Cray wiring does not hav a tone control assigned to the bridge pickup. I left it that way after the swap, but I recently decided to change that and have indeed wired the bridge pickup to a dedicated tone control
Listening in Everett! WA
The tone your getting out those pickups have more to do with the amp your using than than pickups I think. I have the same set of pups, and through my Friedman BE Deluxe or JCM800 into V30 and Greenbacks I get a much richer tone from them
Yeah, that could be. I also believe that 75-80% of the tone that we electric guitarists get is in our hands, and the remaining 20-25% is everything else that we buy, from amps to pedals to strings to pups etc., is there to get us the rest of the way to that sound in our head. Are you going to post any video of your setup for us to hear? It'd be cool to hear these '59's through your amps. Thanks for your comment.
Nice sounding guitar. It's so satisfying when you find your dream pickups. I got a Suhr-strat (used) with vintage Lollar Dirty Blonde's and "My Tone Search" ended on that day. oNe LovE from NYC
Nice video! Ash more balanced for my taste.
I like the way the 59's sound, kind of mid scooped honking sound but focused. I might try these in my mexican strat.
I love these pups, I have sets them in six of my guitars and in the rest of my guitars (14) I have several sets of 54 custom shop pups, texmex pups, and one great set (but can't get them anymore) of 57 custom shop pups and man do they sing so sweet. All of them are great especially the 57's but I use the 59's mostly for giging and the rest for studio work and goofing off. Just my 2 cents worth. Peace.
They sound good. I'd be curious to compare them to the 57/62 set.
Ben was killed in an awful accident in September of '21. His music lives on. As his father, I am comforted by his musical legacy.
A serious bucket list moment! Must have been a whirlwind!
I don't like the sound of those pickups on any five of the switch settings. I also don't like any of the artist signature Stratocasters . They're way overpriced so they can pay a cut to the artist they're endorsed with.I have a 2001 American Standard Strat I bought new for $ 1.100 .00 ,the going price at the time and I like it's better than anything they build now! Fender have too many guitars on their line making it too confusing for the first time buyer .
Great! This should be on the radio!
Thanks!
If both bodies were the same age, it MIGHT be a fair comparison. You have an aged, played body vs a chunk of wood that might have been a tree a matter of months ago. If wood matters; acoustic players have understood for a long time that age changes their guitars over time. They call it "playing in" or "opening up". I can tell you that I have a rosewood Larrivée that the original owner sold because it was a chimy, ringing, monster. I tolerated it, and now 4 years later it is the nicest sounding guitar I have. It still has the highs, but the almost feedback like chiming resonance has gone. There might be a difference between ash and alder, but I would say there is a bigger difference between a 20 year old body and one just months old.
Hey Kyle, I know what you mean about your Larrivee. I have a Gibson J45 acoustic guitar and I had similar experience to yours. It took about five years or maybe even a little longer until that guitar came into its own and really opened up. When I first got it, just strumming it unplugged it sounded a bit like the sound was being compressed, but now it sings. I had an interesting discussion with Jean Larrivee Jr. who grew up around guitar building, and he told me that he'd taken a 20+ year old Larrivee out of a closet, a guitar that hadn't been played much at all, and that compared to a brand new guitar of the same spec the old guitar sounded much better. He credited that strictly to changes in the wood from aging. This difference that aging makes is well noted, and that's why makers like Taylor guitars talk about torrefied tops and other techniques in the building process to sort of pre-age the solid wood tops to make a new guitar sound more mature. So, yes, I have also heard for myself the difference age makes to the acoustic guitar. On an electric solid-body guitar, I have to say I have never noticed the same kind of evolution. I have a Robert Cray Strat I played for ten years in stock condition (except for the saddles which I changed when I bought it), and after ten years that Strat sounded the same as ever to me. I haven't seen much discussion, or experienced myself any definitive examples of aging of a solid body electric guitar's sound being noticably (and I say noticably because I am ready to concede there can be molecular changes to the wood over time) affected by age. But having said that, it would be interesting if anyone could share a video of a before-and-after scenario where they bought a new solid-body electric guitar, and then came back five years later and played the guitar again through the same setup. My expectation would be that it would be hard to tell any difference, but on a good acoustic guitar (and by good I mean at least with a solid top) I would definitely expect a difference.
I’m here because I just got my first ash body strat style guitar and maaaaannn the weight! 😮 I just wanted to see if ash was indeed a heavy wood. The finish on mine is a gorgeous natural honey colour but I’m sure glad I’m a well built guy because it;s gonna be demanding on my shoulders 😅
Hi Dylan, my understanding is that Swamp Ash is typically the lighter ash than northern ash. I have a "Stelecaster" I assembled with a swamp ash body and the weight is not an issue. Back in the CBS days of Fender ownership they looked to cut costs and abandoned swamp ash for nothern ash, which can make for a very heavy guitar. Swamp ash is harder to find now on new guitars due to climate change. The ash literally is in a swamp, used to be for something like three months of the year, and then you could harvest it. Now it's typically inaccessible for much longer parts of the year, and oh yeah, beetle infestations have been wreaking havoc as well. www.guitarworld.com/features/fender-will-no-longer-use-ash-bodies-for-production-line-guitars-we-found-out-why-and-what-woods-will-be-used-instead
They sound great!!!👍
Great song! Bringing back the 1960s vibe and sound with new tunes is a great idea!
Thanks, Pete!
Sonds like early 70's b-sides
Well, that doesn't sound too good! 😂 But if you want to hear what I was doing in the 70's, check out this album from Easy Money: neontasterecords.bandcamp.com/album/collection-79-82
Great video, buddy.I really like this pickup, but it’s difficult to buy,I didn’t find it.
I've used them on a couple of gigs and I'm going to sell them on Reverb.com 'cause I want to get a couple of pedals.
@@KarlHourigan how much money you want to sell?
@@user-qt3cy3uk7m Already sold on Reverb.com
@@user-qt3cy3uk7m you can order them through Wentworth Music in Kelowna. That's where I ordered them.
Amazon has them for $152. I bought mine from them a little over 2 years ago on sale for $99. Put them into a 2000 MIM Fender Strat, changed out all the electronics and put in a new Fender big block american bridge with new saddles. Cleaned the whole guitar up and it sounds beautiful. My favorite guitar.
Fantastic song, and lovely images. Takes me right back to those sweet eastern shores of Lake Winnipeg.
Love it! Very evocative, sweet and summery.
I'm a big Seymour Duncan fan, but holy smokes... Those Robert Crays sounded lightyears better.
I had the USA purple custom shop. They’re so low output which at the time I didn’t appreciate. I traded it after more than a few yrs for humbuckers but regret it. That was his sound. The price has tripled since I bought it as well.
Ash sounded more balanced. Alder a little too lively/harsh..
Holy Toledo, that is lovely! Way to go!
Thanks!
Already love the song but the cartoon is super cute.
I'm sorry to report that Benjamin died in a tragic accident in September of 2021.
I am very sorry to hear that. He made a big impression with his talent. I am very sorry for your loss. My condolences.
Wood makes no difference what so ever. Just look at the comments here. People can't even agree on which sounded brighter etc. That's because the wood makes no difference. Electronics do, set up does, amp settings do. Wood ..no If ther is any actual difference in sound, its due to diferences in setups etc. It is impossible to exactly have the same distances between everything when swapping parts.
Frank, I used to think so too. But I've played so many guitars over the years, that I now agree with people who say everything makes a difference: the neck, the fingerboard, etc. I agree the fastest most noticeable way to make a difference is the pickups, the electronics. But I really believe 75% of all tone starts with the person playing the guitar. I know people who can pick up any guitar and make it sound good, and a few who get tones I just don't like from anything they pick up. Everything else we spend money on is chasing that other 25%. Have you seen this video? ruclips.net/video/i6XXcDiPcKc/видео.html
Awesome Karl, beautiful song!
Wicked tune, nice job Gail and Karl!
thanks, Mike!
Sweet. And weren’t we so very young back when….
oh so young
Happy for you and Gail...and a very sweet song.
Respect for the people of Ukraine. And this is catchy as heck.
Great time to rerelease this - before Valentine's Day but especially to lighten us all up if we've been watching and listening to too much of the news!
Lovely to hear this again.
Great song and video! Thank you for sharing it.
I love this...can you and Gail write a new set of lyrics to go with just having this darn cold spell?
Big Freeze is coming to Harrington Lane?
It's incredible how different they sound. Alder sounds more sparkling, brighter... Ash sounded more balanced to me Wow Maybe just by tunning the EQ of the amp
Too bad you can't leave the RC strat with its pickups, which sounds so wonderfully "straty", and get another guitar for you gigging needs. It's 2021 now (old thread), and you can get excellent guitars for a few hundred dollars now. I bought an "EART" ES-335 with excellent sounding vintage (low power) humbucking pickups, and can't stop playing it. The neck is perfect, Indian rosewood fretboard, stainless steel frets finished perfectly with rounded ends, bone nut, good working smooth tuners, beautiful open-pore satin finish (mahogany veneer over maple ply body) wonderful feeling slick-satin C neck. $389- was all it cost. If that's too much, I also got an ES-335 with P-90's from Grote, which had jumbo frets not finished as well - need dressing, but bone nut, and same open-pore satin finish, slightly larger C neck, tuners not quite as good as the EART, but this one was only $189. I prefer P-90 pickups and jumbo frets, but the EART is a slightly better guitar, and a joy to play. There are dozens of other options now too, as you likely know. It's your guitar, but these excellent Cray strats were made right. Just because the pickups only cost $100- doesn't mean they are excellent pickups. Eric Johnson pickups cost $219, and I don't like them as much - too "sterile" sounding, for want of a better word. I didn't like my Eric Johnson strat in general, neck too big, fretboard radius too flat, weird feeling high-medium frets (I prefer jumbos, and not too high), sticky finish on the neck, but the pickups sound was especially disappointing, although other people love them. It was so pretty to look at, I feel in love with its looks, and thought I could adapt to the larger neck, but I just can't get around as easily on bigger necks. Some people say bigger necks sound better, but Jimmy Page's #1 Les Paul 'Burst had a very thin neck, which is said to influence its tone in a positive way, giving it "zing"....?
man those RC pickups sound great. Very distinctive. But great tone.
humbucker m8
The Duncan's sound dead. No punch, bloom or bell quality. Just flat. Would probably be okay for distortion, but sound way to compressed clean.
Great vid informative
Good effort with limited resources - certainly made the best of them
Thank-you.
"LIKE" and congratulations on your work! good luck with your music !! I made my entry the last day! Greetings from Argentina, where are you from?
Good luck also to you, from Canada
Bravo, great score! I really dig this entry, the spotting is well timed and loved the orchestration. What are your favourite libraries? Best of luck in the competition. I submitted one as well
Thanks, Nicholas. I've recently discovered Spitfire Audio Labs, and I used some of those sounds here. There are some really evocative sounds in there. I used one of the lap steel sounds, Atmos, and drums. I also recently got their BBC Orchestra, very cool, which I've used on another project. For this clip, I also made use of the Alchemy synth in Logic X Pro, and some sounds for the Native Instruments Symphony Essentials.
Great video as to why you should not change out the stock USA custom shop pups on your RC.
Well I'm glad it was good for something!
If you want HB why burn a quality guitar? Just use any cheap strat. If you are playing dirty even a CBS strat will do. Not sensible.
Thing is I don't play dirty much. I needed a fatter clean sound, and I like playing THIS guitar. It feels good and looks good, and doesn't weigh too much. If I was playing dirty more I would have left the Cray pickups in, they sound killer cranked up through my H&K or a Fender Supersonic. But for clean duo work, they were just a little too light sounding.
